Soul Is with Bartholomew Jones

Soul. We all know that Memphis is the birthplace of soul music, but this idea is much bigger than that. It’s about generosity and kindness, activism and spirit, creativity and curiosity. In this series, we ask Memphis artists to talk about what soul means to them.

Soul is the essence of a brew. It’s drinking you coffee black, with no sugar, and no cream. It’s the notes hidden in the seed of tree growing in the mountains of Ethiopia, and more importantly its brewing those seeds well enough to let the world get elevated by its’ energy without compromising the seeds purpose. It’s something that cannot be discerned when others preferences, their sugar and cream, dominate the conversation. Soul means caring the deepest parts of who we really are, and placing that at the forefront our connectivity.
