After 110 years in Overton Park, the Brooks is saying goodbye to its Midtown home. This is the last weekend to walk those galleries, and the museum is sending it off the Memphis way: with costumes, kids’ art, and a DJ.
The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art closes its Overton Park doors for good on Sunday, September 27, ahead of its move downtown. If you’ve got a memory tied to that building, whether it’s a field trip, a first date, or a Saturday morning with the kids, this weekend is your chance to make one more. Gallery admission is free for Shelby County residents all month, and it’ll stay free for residents at the new downtown museum too.
Friday, Sept 25 · 7 to 10 PM
Come As Thou Art
The Brooks’ annual masquerade ball and runway goes Broadway this year, with cocktails, live music, and Memphis designers competing for a spot in next year’s Memphis Art and Fashion Week. Come in costume. Tickets start at $25.
Saturday, Sept 26 · 10 AM to 12 PM
Super Saturday
The museum’s free Saturday morning gets a send-off twist: visitors will make blue drawings that become part of an installation in the new downtown museum. A little piece of Midtown, carried to the river.
Sunday, Sept 27 · 3 to 5 PM
Junk Journal Jam
Close out the last day with Like Really Creative, a mixed-media collage session using vintage magazines and paper ephemera, with DJ Lil Coffdrop on the music.
While you’re there, catch the final exhibitions in the building, including Memphis College of Art, 1936-2020: An Enduring Legacy and David Uzochukwu: Bodies of Water. Heading to the Pink Palace Crafts Fair this weekend? Your ticket also gets you into the Brooks’ permanent collection.
Next up, the Brooks becomes the Memphis Art Museum, opening this December in a new Herzog & de Meuron designed home on the downtown riverfront. Before it moves, one more weekend in the park.
