LeMoyne-Owen College: Tech, Tradition, and Homecoming

There’s an undeniable energy buzzing around LeMoyne-Owen College, a cornerstone of Black excellence and community in Memphis. From cutting-edge technology conferences to the much-anticipated return of homecoming traditions, the campus at 807 Walker Avenue is a hub of innovation and celebration. As the college continues its legacy of shaping future leaders, it masterfully blends forward-thinking initiatives with a deep respect for its rich history. Let’s explore two major events that capture the vibrant spirit of the LOC Magicians: the recent Next in Tech conference and the upcoming Homecoming 2025 celebration!

Paving the Future with “Next in Tech”

LeMoyne-Owen College is not just participating in the conversation about technology and artificial intelligence; it’s leading it. The recent “Next in Tech: Cybersecurity and AI Conference” was a powerful demonstration of the college’s commitment to preparing its students and the wider community for the future. The event brought together nearly 150 attendees, including local and national professionals, for a day of exploration, networking, and innovation.

The goal was clear: to demystify complex topics like cybersecurity and AI and make them accessible to everyone. Kimberly Bailey, the Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at LOC, emphasized this, stating, “We don’t want people to fear either topic, so bringing it to the campus in this way keeps it at the forefront of everyone’s minds.”

Highlights from the Conference

The conference was packed with insightful sessions and engaging activities designed for all skill levels.

  • Inspiring Keynote: Gerald Keys, Chief Music Officer at The Ludacris Foundation and founder of the Prompt Haus, delivered a dynamic keynote address. He shared practical ways to dream big and execute those dreams using AI, sparking creativity and ambition in the audience.
  • Engaging Workshops: Breakout sessions covered a wide range of topics, including cybersecurity basics, the role of AI in everyday life, and careers in technology. There was even a special session, SmartAI for seniors, ensuring that the digital revolution includes every generation.
  • Hackathon Challenge: In partnership with Memphis’s own CodeCrew, the conference hosted a thrilling hackathon. Students and other participants formed teams to develop and pitch new tech ideas to a panel of expert judges, competing for cash prizes and showcasing their incredible talent.

The event also welcomed high school students from across the city, giving them a firsthand look at the opportunities available in the tech field and at LeMoyne-Owen College. This initiative showcases LOC’s dedication to fostering the next generation of tech leaders, right here in Memphis.

Get Ready for Homecoming 2025: 807 & Park!

As the campus community buzzes from the success of the tech conference, an even bigger celebration is on the horizon! Homecoming 2025, themed 807 & Park, promises to be an unforgettable experience. Inspired by the iconic energy of BET’s 106 & Park and deeply rooted in LOC’s legacy, this week-long event is more than just a party—it’s a cultural movement.

From October 19th to October 26th, alumni will return to their beloved “807” home, current students will create lifelong memories, and the entire Memphis community will come together to honor the college’s past, present, and future. This is where legacy, culture, and community unite!
