Whitehaven High School’s Class of 2026 earned more than $300 million in scholarships this year, and the numbers tell a story that does not get told enough.
Fifty-seven students earned ACT scores of 30 or higher. More than 100 students individually earned over $1 million in scholarship offers. Principal Dr. Vincent Hunter says the results come down to what he calls the school’s three Cs: culture, commitment, and curriculum.
This year, Whitehaven shifted to a 10-period schedule with dedicated time for ACT and SAT preparation. But Hunter says the school’s mission goes beyond test scores.
“We believe Whitehaven is a place where family values meet academic rigor,” Hunter said.
The success is happening in a community where many students face real challenges outside the classroom, including financial struggles, emotional trauma, and violence in their neighborhoods. Hunter says the school’s response is to push students to think beyond their circumstances and compete on a global level.
Still, one concern weighs on him. Many of Whitehaven’s highest-achieving students do not see Memphis as part of their future.
“We’re losing our best talent to make other cities and other states better,” Hunter said.
Whitehaven plans to address that by expanding STEM education, coding, internships, music production, and career-focused pathways to keep students engaged and hopeful about what Memphis has to offer.
