Construction is officially underway on a new home for future Memphis doctors. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) broke ground Thursday on its new College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building, a $350 million project on the Memphis campus.
It is the largest state-funded higher education capital investment in Tennessee history. The building will give the College of Medicine a dedicated, modern space to train more providers, with room to grow each incoming medical class from 175 to 250 students and double the physician assistant program from 30 to 60 students a year.
Tennessee faces a physician shortage, especially in rural counties, and training more doctors here is one of the surest ways to keep them here. Construction is expected to wrap up in 2029.
It is a building meant to bring future doctors, physician assistants, and other health professionals together under one roof, so the people who will care for us learn to do it as a team, right here at home.
