Downtown Memphis turned out in force for the Fourth of July. Thousands of people packed Tom Lee Park for the annual Independence Day on the River celebration, marking America’s 250th birthday with live music, food, family activities, and a fireworks show over the Mississippi.
The Downtown Memphis Commission had projected more than 6,000 attendees at the main event alone, with hundreds more watching from rooftops at downtown hotels like the Peabody and Hyatt Centric. The evening featured three stages of live entertainment before the night’s centerpiece: a drone and fireworks display launched from Mud Island River Park, visible across downtown.
Despite the summer heat, the celebration drew a strong crowd of families and first-timers alike. For Sam Franklin, a member of the Stax Music Academy Alumni Band, it was his first Fourth of July at Tom Lee Park, and he called the experience a chance for the whole community to come together.
