Smartasset studied how far $100,000 goes in the country's largest cities by adjusting after-tax income for the cost of living in those cities. In Memphis, according to the study, $100,000 is worth $86,444 in take-home pay — more than any other city on the list.

In recent years, Memphis has earned spots on a variety of lists that could draw people into the city. For example, in late 2019 — shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic — Forbes named it one of the 25 Best Places to Visit in 2020. In 2021, Time Magazine touted it as one of the World’s Greatest Places, while in 2022, Condé Nast Traveler named Memphis one of 23 places in world for tourists to visit in 2023.

And earlier this year, the city was named one of the best places in the country to open an Airbnb in.
