Memphis restaurants and businesses getting national notice on ‘best of’ lists

Memphis has lots to brag about this year.

Memphis restaurants, businesses and more are racking up national “best of” honors from Fortune, Forbes, OpenTable and many others. Here is a look at some of the recent accolades.

2024 College Free Speech Rankings

College Pulse and the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression’s 2024 College Free Speech rankings included the University of Memphis, which came in at No. 39. Schools were analyzed based on students’ First Amendment rights of speech, expression and assembly. U of M was categorized as slightly above average with an overall score of 56.14.

Fortune’s 50 Best Places to Live for Families

Fortune released its list of the 50 Best Places to Live for Families, and Olive Branch came in at No. 36.

LawnStarter 2023’s Best BBQ Cities

In August, LawnStarter released its list of best BBQ cities in America. While Memphis made the list, it’s No. 4 ranking was well below where Memphians know the city belongs. The top three spots were 1. Kansas City, Missouri; 2. St. Louis; and 3. Kansas City, Kansas.

OpenTable’s Best Brunch Spots

Coastal Fish Company is located on the banks of Hyde Lake in Shelby Farms Park.

In May, Coastal Fish Company landed on OpenTable’s list of Top 100 Brunch Spots. It was the only Memphis restaurant to make the list.

Southern Living’s 9 Destinations to Visit by Train

The city of Memphis was included on Southern Living’s list of the nine best places to visit by train in the South. It came in at No. 9 behind New Orleans and in front of Dallas.

Southern Living’s The South’s Most Legendary Steakhouses

Two Memphis restaurants made Southern Living’s list of the South’s Most Legendary SteakhousesBuckley’s Grill came in at No. 7, while Folk’s Folly topped the list at No. 1.

Southern Living’s South’s Top 50 Barbecue Joints

The most recent Southern Living list that included Memphis spots was its top 50 barbecue restaurants in the South. Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous ranked at No. 47, while Cozy Corner came in at No. 25. But the highest-ranking Memphis-area spot was A&R Bar-B-Que, which landed at No. 11.

USA TODAY’s Best Historic Hotels

As part of the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, The Peabody landed at No. 2 on the list of best historic hotels in the nation. It was second to the Historic Hotel Bethlehem in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Washington Post’s Best Pizza by State

The Washington Post went a little further than some other lists by ranking the most popular pizza style in each state. They then went through each state to find the best restaurants for each style of pizza in each state. For New York Style, New York Style Pizzeria in Collierville was ranked No. 4. For Chicago Style Pizza, East of Chicago Pizza in Germantown ranked No. 3, and Izzy and Adam’s in Memphis ranked No. 1.

Yelp’s Best Steakhouse in Every State
