Memphis artist’s design debuts on Times Square Jumbotron

Eso Tolson, aka @coolurbanhippie, says his brand — “joy, pride, Black culture, celebration” — has a lot in common with the themes of a multinational beverage company headquartered in Atlanta.

The Memphis artist says that’s probably why the Coca-Cola Company chose his art as part of its New Year’s Eve message to be featured on the Times Square Jumbotron through Jan. 11. That campaign, which Tolson spelled out in his unique lettering, is “New Year, New Hope.”

“It’s a pretty big deal. It might hit me tomorrow,” Tolson, 36, said by phone this week about the Coke connection.
