Google has officially confirmed plans to bring a massive new data center campus to the Memphis area—an investment that could reshape the region’s economic landscape.
The Fortune 100 company, through its related entity Groot LLC, will move forward with what’s been dubbed “Project Pyramid” on a 580-acre site in West Memphis, Arkansas. Earlier this year, the City of West Memphis approved a 30-year payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) agreement for the $1 billion, 900,000-square-foot facility. The agreement outlines the creation of about 50 high-quality jobs and includes the possibility of up to $10 billion in future data center construction, should conditions align.
A site plan filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shows that Project Pyramid could eventually include five separate data center campuses.
A Major Energy Partnership
To power the development, Google is partnering with Entergy Arkansas. The utility provider has filed for approval with the Arkansas Public Service Commission for a special rate contract to support the project. Google has committed to covering the facility’s full energy costs while also investing in new solar power and battery storage resources to ensure sustainable operations.
“We’re thrilled to confirm plans to build a data center campus in West Memphis,” said Laurel Brown, Google’s regional head of data center public affairs. “We look forward to engaging with the West Memphis community and will be sharing more details soon.”
Entergy Arkansas President and CEO Laura Landreaux added: “Google’s investment in Arkansas will stimulate economic growth in Northeast Arkansas and across the state. Together, we’re powering growth and building a stronger, more vibrant future for the next generation.”
Billions in Broader Investment
Project Pyramid comes as part of Google’s parent company Alphabet’s $85 billion plan to expand data centers nationwide in 2025. Locally, Groot LLC purchased the parcels off Bollinger Road in late 2024, securing the 1,200-acre site that will house the campus.
West Memphis Mayor Marco McClendon emphasized Google’s commitment to being more than just a corporate presence: “Google has made it clear they want to be more than an investor. They want to be a true partner in our community, and we look forward to sharing more at the official announcement soon.”
