UT Health Science Center is getting an early boost toward its new College of Medicine building, thanks to a $5 million gift from the First Horizon Foundation. The donation kicks off a $50 million philanthropic campaign that will help fund the seven story building planned for Madison Avenue, part of a $361 million project the university calls the largest state funded higher education capital investment in Tennessee history.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the building fully occupied by 2030. At more than 300,000 square feet, it will house the largest of UT Health Sciences’ six colleges, bringing research, technology, and hands on training together under one roof in the heart of the Memphis Medical District.
“First Horizon’s leadership in this project is a powerful vote of confidence in the future of health care in our state,” said Dr. Peter Buckley, chancellor of UT Health Sciences. Once complete, the building is expected to train 1,450 new physicians and physician assistants in its first five years, helping meet growing demand for health care providers across Tennessee.
