A $25 million mixed use project taking shape at Poplar Avenue and South Mendenhall Road now has a name and a construction permit to match. Developers Darrell Horn and Brown Gill are building 5000 Poplar on the site of the former First Horizon building, which is currently being demolished to make room for a three story, 50,000 square foot building with office and retail space.
The plans also include a standalone restaurant called The Tradition, a 6,300 square foot space with 170 seats going up where Houston’s once stood, along with a small “jewel box” building tucked between the main structures for a single tenant such as a dessert shop or jeweler. Underground and surface parking will bring more than 180 total spaces to the site, along with bike parking.
Architecture firm LRK is designing the project, with Rockfield Engineering handling civil work and Mark Levy leading landscape design. Gill says the team has already lined up tenants it isn’t ready to name yet, and with an opening targeted for early 2028, 5000 Poplar adds another data point to East Memphis’ steady run of new development along Poplar Avenue.
