Downtown Memphis came alive this past weekend as more than 10,000 people gathered to celebrate everything that makes our city special on 901 Day.
The day was filled with music, food, family fun, and Memphis pride, with Mayor Paul Young noting the positive energy that carried throughout the event.
“Disregarding all the negativity you hear about Memphis, it felt real safe. Everybody seemed like they were having a good time—it’s children out here, it’s families, it’s a vibe,” Mayor Young said. “We’ve worked to make sure the area is safe and protected, and MPD was in full force. No major incidents were reported, which speaks to the spirit of the day.”
Beyond the joy of the celebration, Mayor Young highlighted the economic impact of 901 Day. “Our hope is even after the event ends, people will explore other neighborhoods across Memphis to eat, shop, and support local businesses,” he said.
The celebration also brought unforgettable moments on stage, including nine-year-old viral star Alaynna Dot performing “Chickenhead” alongside Memphis legend Project Pat, with surprise guest La Chat of Three 6 Mafia joining the fun.
For Memphis artists, the day was about more than entertainment—it was about community. “We just keep it positive, let people know if they’re still breathing, they’ve got a chance,” said Project Pat.
“Memphis is just going to be Memphis,” added La Chat. “We’ve got our own slang, our own swag, our own style. Nobody can be Memphis but us.”
Local rapper and songwriter Kia Shine echoed that message: “It’s our responsibility not to celebrate negativity, but to lift up individuals that are positive.”
And as rapper K Carbon reflected, the heart of the day was unity. “These are the moments that need to be highlighted. Our people came together, supported each other, ate good food, had drinks, vibed out, and made it home safe.”
901 Day once again proved what we already know—Memphis is a city full of soul, resilience, and community.
