One of Midtown’s most noticeable quiet corners is finally getting its next chapter. The Economic Development Growth Engine of Memphis and Shelby County (EDGE) approved financing this week for a Tapestry Collection by Hilton hotel at Central Avenue and Highland Street, a project that sat idle for years near the University of Memphis.
Led by developer Vince Smith, the plan calls for 112 rooms, meeting space, a restaurant, a lobby bar and a 114-seat rooftop bar on the former site of the Third Church of Christ, Scientist. Groundbreaking is expected in early 2027.
Tapestry hotels are designed around the character of their neighborhoods, and this one gives visiting families, campus guests, and business travelers a place to stay right in the University District. It also gives Memphians a new rooftop to watch the sun go down over Midtown.
