More than a century after Tom Lee pulled 32 people from the Mississippi River, the little house where he lived out his days in North Memphis finally carries a marker worthy of his story. On Wednesday, July 22, a Tennessee Historical Commission marker was unveiled outside Lee’s former home at 923 N. Mansfield St. in the Klondike neighborhood, telling the story of the 1925 rescue that made him a Memphis legend.
The marker does more than recount that day on the river. It honors the life Lee built afterward in the home the Engineers Club of Memphis built for him, and it names his place among the many African-American leaders who served this city with courage and compassion. As reported by the Daily Memphian, the language on the marker frames Lee’s legacy in fuller terms than the simple hero story most of us grew up with.
The house itself is a work in progress with a bright future. The foundation has been stabilized, a new roof is on, and the Klondike Smokey City Community Development Corp. hopes to see it become a museum. It sits inside a broader neighborhood revival led by the Klondike Partnership, with new homes going up and long-time residents kept in place.
“This house and this status means community,” said Quincey Morris, longtime executive director of the CDC. “It means we all live in the city of Memphis, and we are one neighborhood.”
Mayor Paul Young, who has set a goal of building or renovating 10,000 housing units by 2030, put it plainly: Memphis wants its history integrated into its future, and markers like this one make sure that happens.
