Ways to Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month in Memphis This May

Share

Every May, Memphis comes alive with the vibrant colors, flavors, and traditions of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. This nationwide celebration honors the rich histories and diverse cultures of AAPI communities. Here in the 901, we have a wide variety of events, culinary experiences, and artistic showcases that reflect our appreciation for the Bluff City’s AAPI residents.

There are some local businesses you can support year-round, so consider stopping by these spots soon:

  • Mosa Asian Bistro, founded by the Pao family, blends Thai, Chinese, and Japanese flavors using fresh, local ingredients to carry on the legacy of Formosa Restaurant.
  • Tuyen’s Asian Bistro, led by Chef Tuyen Le, has authentic Vietnamese recipes with dishes like lemongrass tofu and signature pho.
  • Swagath Indian Cuisine & Bar, over on Poplar Ave, features authentic Indian dishes from various regions, like tandoori naan and paneer.
  • Petals of a Peony in Cordova serves authentic Szechuan dishes, including spicy dumplings and dandan noodles, in an elegant setting.
  • Nagoya House Hibachi & Ramen offers a diverse menu of Japanese dishes, from donburi rice bowls to hibachi-style entrees.

The Hungry Tiger Food Tour

One of the highlights of Memphis’s AAPI Heritage Month is the Hungry Tiger Food Tour, a month-long culinary adventure that takes participants through many different Asian cuisines. From savory biryanis at Amrutha Vilas to delicate sushi rolls at Takashi Bistro, the tour offers a taste of our city’s rich AAPI culinary landscape. These dining experiences satisfy the taste buds and provide a platform to appreciate the culture behind each dish.

Artistic Events Showcasing AAPI Creativity

Art plays a pivotal role in this month-long celebration, and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art will present Suchitra Mattai’s installation, with abundance we meet, a sculptural piece crafted from braided vintage saris that symbolizes fertility, migration, domestic labor, and feminine strength. Be sure to catch it starting on May 22nd.

You can also catch a new addition this year: the Saddle Creek Gallery featuring the AAPI Heritage Month Student Art Exhibit. The opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 24th, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Shops at Saddle Creek. This exhibit showcases the creativity of K-12 students from Memphis and Shelby County, under the theme ‘Celebrate AAPI Stories, Traditions, and Identity.’ The artwork reflects the experiences of the AAPI community and their cultural influence.

Dragon Boat Festival at Shelby Farms

The month concludes with the Memphis Dragon Boat Festival at Hyde Lake in Shelby Farms. This event, offering boat races, dance performances, and live music, embodies the spirit of unity and cultural pride. It’s hosted by the Memphis Chinese Community Center, a non-profit organization.
