The National Civil Rights Museum (NCRM) is collaborating with 10 other prominent Black museums and institutions across the country to celebrate Juneteenth.

Members of the group, called the BlkFreedom Collective, share resources, collaborate, and raise awareness about their work.

NCRM participated in the initial BlkFreedom conversations in 2020, during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Black institutions were disproportionately affected by the lockdown, and BlkFreedom began as an effort to remind people of our existence and ongoing work,” said Noelle Trent, Director of Interpretation, Collections, and Education at NCRM. “During the course of planning, the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor occurred. The protests surrounding their tragic deaths also motivated the group to reassert the humanity and culture interpreted and housed in our institutions.”

Juneteenth celebrates the day — June 19, 1865 — when Gen. Gordon Granger issued the order in Galveston, Texas, to announce and enforce the end of slavery in compliance with President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation.

This is the third year that the BlkFreedom Collective is producing a Juneteenth program on BlkFreedom.org. The virtual presentation begins Sunday, June 19, at noon.
