Memphis talent took center stage in New Orleans this Mardi Gras season and brought home top honors.
Two Memphis-Shelby County Schools marching bands earned first-place victories in Battle of the Bands competitions during Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans, showcasing the strength of music education across the Memphis.
Whitehaven High School’s “Sounds of Perfection” Band claimed first place in the Krewe of Rex Mardi Gras Battle of the Bands competition, while Raleigh-Egypt High School secured first place in the Krewe of Argus Mardi Gras Battle of the Bands.
Additional Memphis schools also represented the city during the celebration. Bands from White Station High School and Mitchell High School performed as part of the Mardi Gras festivities, further highlighting the depth of musical talent within the district.
The wins are especially meaningful for Raleigh-Egypt’s program. Earlier this month, Corey Travis, director of bands at Raleigh-Egypt High School, turned to social media seeking practice space after winter weather forced school closures for nearly two weeks. With limited rehearsal time due to the ice storm, the band faced a major obstacle ahead of the competition.
That’s when Embassy of Faith International Church stepped in, opening its doors to provide rehearsal space without hesitation.
Travis says that kind of community investment is critical to the program’s continued growth.
“The students are really hungry for music. I’m really serious about getting a high-level, quality music program at that school,” Travis said.
From overcoming winter setbacks to earning first-place honors on one of the country’s biggest cultural stages, these students demonstrated what Memphis already knows: when talent meets community support, excellence follows.
