A new chapter begins in South Memphis this week as the City of Memphis marks the completion of the South City Redevelopment Project — a transformative effort that’s been a decade in the making.
What began with federal funding approved by former President Barack Obama in 2015 has now become a thriving community of more than 700 new homes, providing housing for over 1,000 Memphians.
Built on the site of the former Foote Homes near Danny Thomas Boulevard and Mississippi Boulevard, the new South City neighborhood blends modern design with a deep sense of local history. About two-thirds of the units are designated as affordable housing, ensuring families of all backgrounds can call the area home.
The first residents moved into completed phases in 2019, and now — with the sixth and final phase finished — the city will officially celebrate this milestone at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning.
More than just a redevelopment project, South City represents progress, community, and the continued revitalization of Memphis neighborhoods.
