Soul Is with Talibah Safiya

Soul. We all know that Memphis is the birthplace of soul music, but this idea is much bigger than that. It’s about generosity and kindness, activism and spirit, creativity and curiosity. In this series, we ask Memphis artists to talk about what soul means to them.

There’s this innate whisper in all humans to first access then express the truth of who they are. To me, that’s soul. For some of us, the call is answered through action. We seek experiences that will get us closer to understanding our ever-changing selves and put our observations in our work. For others of us, the call is answered through appreciation. We honor what makes us all the same by supporting soulful works, whether artistic, community or politically centered. One thing about soul is, you can’t fake it. The people will always know.
