People locally and across the globe have taken to the streets in protest police brutality in the USA. With everything going on, it can be hard to also remember that we’re currently in a global pandemic. So how do you spread your attention across both? How can citizens stand up for what’s right and exercise their civic right to protest, but also protect themselves and their loved ones from Covid-19? The rules for fighting the spread of Covid19 still stand, so here’s how you stay safe while protesting.
Wear a Mask
The most important thing you can do to protect yourself and others from covid-19 is to wear a mask. Wearing a mask lowers the chance of you getting infected with the virus and also protects those around you from being exposed if you have the virus. Of course, if you are experiencing symptoms you avoid large groups like a protest and should self-quarantine and get tested. But if you happen to be asymptomatic, wearing a mask will protect other people from getting sick. Wearing a mask in the summer heat may be difficult, so make sure to stay hydrated, drink plenty of water, and pace yourself to not overheat.
Practice Social Distancing
Another way to protect yourself from covid-19 while protesting is to try and practice social distancing. It can be hard to do that during a crowded protest, but try to keep space between you and the other protesters around you. You can also practice social distancing by staying with the same group you arrived at the protest with.
Keep Your Hands Clean
Making sure your hands are clean and avoiding touching your face is a key way to stay safe during a protest. Add hand sanitizer to your list of protest essentials and try to disinfect your hands before touching your eyes, nose, or face. You can also consider wearing gloves, but remember you can still transmit the virus if your gloves are dirty and you still touch your face. As soon as you’re able to, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Get Tested After
After the protest is over, one of the most important things you can do is get tested for covid-19 after. There are several places throughout the Memphis community to get tested for free, and you should be able to get your results in a couple of days. If you test positive, follow CDC rules and regulations for self-quarantining and avoid going to another protest.
