Regional One Health is one step closer to building a new, state-of-the-art hospital in Memphis after receiving approval from the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission.
The commission granted a Certificate of Need (CON) for the proposed facility, which will be located at the former The Commercial Appeal site on Union Avenue. The approval marks a major milestone in a long-planned effort to modernize healthcare infrastructure in the region.
Leaders say the new hospital is designed to improve patient outcomes and expand access to care for families across the Mid-South. Dr. Reginald Coopwood called the decision a significant step forward, emphasizing the organization’s long-standing commitment to serving Memphis—dating back to its founding in 1829.
The $900 million project has been years in the making, with $500 million already approved by the Shelby County Commission and an additional $250 million expected through philanthropic support.
Beyond healthcare, the project is also expected to deliver a major economic boost—generating an estimated $892 million in economic impact by 2027, along with thousands of construction and secondary jobs.
Regional One currently treats more than 12,000 trauma patients annually—far exceeding the capacity of its existing facility. Leaders say the new hospital will help meet growing demand and ensure the system can continue delivering high-quality care for future generations.
