A Memphis educator is receiving national recognition for his impact in the classroom and beyond. Timothy Moore, a 10th-grade English teacher at Freedom Prep Academy, has been selected as one of the Pulitzer Center’s newest Teaching Fellows, an honor awarded to only twelve educators across the country.

With 20 years of experience, numerous awards, and a reputation for going above and beyond, Moore has built a legacy rooted in compassion, rigor, and community. His commitment to excellence shapes not only his lessons but the way his students see themselves and their ability to lead.

Despite ongoing national conversations about education policy and government gridlock, Moore remains focused on what he can control: creating a safe, empowering space for his students.

“No matter what’s going on in the world, there are two things you can control,” Moore said. “The four corners of the room around you. For me, that’s my classroom. When my students walk in, they know they’re loved, valued, and safe.”

Moore views education as an act of consistent love—an investment in community. This winter, his students can expect even more opportunities to think critically about global issues and explore the world through literature, writing, and discussion.

Beyond the classroom, Moore is also known across Memphis for his work as a spoken word artist under the name Urban Thoughts. His poetry has taken him from Japan to Mexico, and his talent has earned him local acclaim, including Poet/Spoken Word Artist of the Year at the Elegance Awards.

As a Pulitzer Teaching Fellow, Moore will participate in the program Examining Interconnected Health Inequities through Global Reporting, gaining tools and perspectives that he will bring back to his students in Memphis. He hopes to show them what is possible through dedication and intellectual curiosity.

“People say they want to be pro athletes,” Moore said. “I want to be a pro educator. I aspire to master this craft—and build a good life for my family and community using my brain.”

Moore’s selection underscores his commitment to preparing students to meet the world with curiosity, empathy, and action—qualities that continue to make him one of Memphis’ most impactful educators.
