Parks David gives us an exclusive behind the scenes look at the upcoming short film “Chocolate Galaxy” due out later this summer. The motion picture with accompanying soundtrack follows Fuzzy Slippers (played by Parks) as he journeys into Sector 9, formerly Memphis, Tennessee.
Here’s what Parks had to say about the project: “Chocolate Galaxy is more than just a movie. It reimagines the relationship between music and film. A couple of years ago, me and Peel (Ryan, co-creator/producer) wanted to make a movie that captured Memphis culture in a new fresh way. Set in the not-too-distant future, Chocolate Galaxy combines the undeniable funk of Purple Rain and the hilarious dramedy of the original Friday. CG is a fun journey that oozes Memphis. In the words of the soundtrack’s opening: ‘Ride with me, what’s your constellation? I got my own space station. Ride with me.’ See you later this summer.”
ABOUT PARKS DAVID
Parks David is a native Memphian and musician who is building a brand that spans the studio, stage and screen. As an entertainer and entrepreneur, he puts Memphis on the map as the next destination for indie sound and style.
Parks began playing the bass guitar in the Jazz Studies Program at Overton High School and the Soulsville Jazz Ensemble at Stax Music Academy. He earned a scholarship to the University of Memphis’ Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, where he graduated with his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance.
Parks auditioned for MTV’s reality series, Making the Band, as a college junior in 2009. In a nationwide search of over 40,000 acts, he was cast to compete with the top 20 contestants for a spot on Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records label.
Shortly after the show, Parks toured 80 cities as the bassist for multi-platinum reggae-pop artist Sean Kingston in the opening act for the North American leg of Justin Bieber’s My World Tour. After the Kingston tour, Bieber hired David to play in his own tour band. Today, Parks tours with Jason Derulo and other pop superstars.
Playing the world’s top stages sparked Parks’ dream to celebrate and elevate Memphis talent, and in 2013 he founded Lyfe is Dope to connect taste makers and thought leaders to local artists. The brand lives the legacy of Memphis music through concerts and festivals that feature big names like Project Pat and BlocBoy JB — as well as fresh faces like Brandon Brown and Emi Secrest.
Parks continues to bring Memphis soul to the airwaves as the bassist for Ledisi, and he most recently won a 2021 Grammy as a credited artist on her Billboard #1 single Anything for You. The hit song from her ninth studio album, The Wild Card, won the Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
