MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A multi-million dollar vision to transform a vacant high-rise in Orange Mound into a mixed-use development is one step closer to becoming a reality.
According to the Memphis Business Journal, Orange Mound Tower at 2205 Lamar Avenue has exited predevelopment and now enters the design and schematics phase.
The 10-acre site, formerly home to United Equipment Rentals, is slated to be transformed into a commercial and residential hub centered on Black innovation and supporting the historic neighborhood in which it sits.
Developers told MBJ that they plan to include art galleries and artist-supporting spaces like studios and artist apartments, as well as a recording and performance venue. Local market-rate multifamily units, office space, a courtyard and commercial space are also planned for Orange Mound Tower.
The Orange Mound Tower project is headed by nonprofit TONE and Unapologetic. The development team includes LRK and Aaron Patrick Architects (APA), ComCap, AllWorld Project Management, and consultants Darrell Cobbins and Bill Ganus.
The group raised $2.1 million to get through predevelopment and hopes to progress to the construction phase before the end of 2024.
