Tucked behind an unassuming “FCS” sign in the heart of Harbor Town, Fat Charlie’s Speakeasy has quietly become one of Downtown Memphis’ best-kept secrets. Now, the secret’s out—this cozy cigar bar and cocktail lounge has been named one of USA TODAY’s 29 Bars of the Year for 2025.

Founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife team Will and LaTonia Richardson, Fat Charlie’s opened at a time when connection and community were needed most. Despite launching during the height of the pandemic, the speakeasy quickly became a local favorite for its intimate atmosphere, creative drinks, and warm hospitality.

“Memphis has a lot of hidden gems full of history, mystery and love,” said Will Richardson. “For Fat Charlie’s to be recognized at this level by USA TODAY confirms we’re one of those gems, too. But don’t tell anyone!”

More Than a Bar — A True Memphis Experience

Step through the disguised entrance and you’ll find a space that shifts with the energy of the evening—whether it’s a low-key night of conversation, a high-energy game watch, or a soulful live performance. Artists like Black Cream and Courtney Little have graced the stage, and live music lights up the lounge every Wednesday at 8 p.m..

Inside, plush leather chairs and a low-lit ambiance set the tone for relaxed evenings and spontaneous connections. Drinks are served playfully in teacups and mugs—a nod to the Prohibition-era roots of traditional speakeasies—ranging from classic spirits and wine to THC-infused and non-alcoholic options. And for a true taste of Tennessee, you can sip on Uncle Nearest whiskey from just down the road.

Hungry? Don’t sleep on the Alex Farms Chicken Salad platter, a sweet and smoky favorite served with an assortment of crackers—perfect for pairing with whatever you’re sipping.
