Memphis continues to make waves in the sustainability space, with homegrown startup Graphyte gaining national recognition for its groundbreaking carbon capture technology. Recently named one of Fast Company’s most innovative sustainable companies of 2025, Graphyte is gearing up for a major expansion as it scales up production capabilities.
“We’re thrilled by how much we’ve accomplished over the last two years,” said Barclay Rogers, founder and CEO of Graphyte. “As a rapidly growing startup, we’re setting our sights even higher for the next phase of our journey.”
Graphyte specializes in capturing carbon by transforming agricultural and timber biomass waste into solid bricks, which are then buried to sequester carbon dioxide. Currently operating a production facility in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the company has the capacity to remove 15,000 metric tons of carbon annually. However, big changes are on the horizon.
By the end of the year, Graphyte aims to increase its Pine Bluff facility’s capacity to 50,000 metric tons, using a modular expansion model that will allow for future scaling. Beyond Arkansas, the company is already laying the groundwork for additional projects across the Southeast, the American West, and even Canada.
“We expect to complete this expansion later this year, but we’re just getting started,” Rogers added. “Our scaling journey is well underway, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.”
With Memphis as its home base, Graphyte’s growth is a testament to the city’s potential as a hub for sustainability and innovation. Keep an eye on this local startup as it continues to push boundaries in the fight against climate change.
