AutoZone Park $55M Renovation in Memphis

The City of Memphis is moving forward with a $55 million renovation of AutoZone Park, signaling a strong commitment to keeping the Memphis Redbirds in the city long-term and potentially sparking new development around the stadium.

In June, the city signed a contract with project management firm Vieste, marking the beginning of what is described as “Phase 2” of improvements to the ballpark. This phase focuses on deferred maintenance, enhancing the fan experience, and exploring ideas for a next-generation “AutoZone Park of the Future.” It may also include new programming, economic impact studies, and financial planning, with the possibility of mixed-use development in the surrounding area.

While exact details of that surrounding development remain unclear, the stadium’s location—directly across Union Avenue from the vacant lot once planned as The Walk at Union—opens the door for major downtown revitalization. The field sits between AutoZone Park and FedExForum, which is also the subject of active negotiations for a $550 million renovation to secure the Memphis Grizzlies’ long-term future.

According to the city’s agreement with Vieste, the firm will manage the renovation and planning process for an estimated fee of $1.65 million over three years. The City of Memphis is collaborating with Redbirds ownership, Diamond Baseball Holdings, to finalize a funding plan, which will be outlined in a detailed report by year’s end. In the meantime, the city has already begun addressing safety and maintenance needs at the stadium.

The Redbirds praised the city’s progress, stating they remain committed to ensuring AutoZone Park continues to be a “best-in-class” facility and vital community asset.

Additionally, the city has nearly completed all Major League Baseball-required improvements to keep the stadium compliant with league standards for minor league affiliates. Updates like new LED lighting, upgraded batting cages, and safety netting have already been made, with only a new batting tunnel still in progress.

This renovation not only reinforces Memphis’ dedication to its sports teams but also reflects a broader effort to activate and elevate Downtown Memphis as a vibrant hub for sports, community events, and future development.
