FOUNDED IN 1992 BY HOWARD LAMB AND CARL WOLFE, AND CURRENTLY UNDER THE DIRECTION OF DR. MICHAEL SHULTS, THE MEMPHIS JAZZ ORCHESTRA IS AMONG THE OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY PERFORMING PROFESSIONAL BIG BANDS IN THE UNITED STATES. FEATURING A WHO’S WHO OF MEMPHIS JAZZ VETERANS AND UP-AND-COMING TALENT ALIKE, THEY HAVE HELD A HISTORIC WEEKLY RESIDENCY AT ALFRED’S ON BEALE STREET FOR OVER THREE DECADES.
Saxophonist Bobby Watson is among the most historically significant living composers and performers in jazz. He has performed and recorded with artists including Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (in which he was the storied band’s longest tenured musical director from 1977-1981), George Coleman, Charlie Persip, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Max Roach, Joe Williams, Dianne Reeves, Lou Rawls, Betty Carter, Carmen Lundy, and more. In addition to George Coleman, Bobby has had close musical associations with other Memphis luminaries including pianists James Williams and Mulgrew Miller.
