5 FRIDAYS OF JAZZ
About This Event
Candace Mache has a refined, powerful voice, the kind of voice that you can imagine coming out of an RCA Victor radio in 1935, soaring over Benny Goodman's Orchestra. Her repertoire focuses on early 20th century popular music - Tin Pan Alley, Harlem jazz, and Hot swing. Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra are huge influences on her vocal style.
As a child growing up in Memphis, she studied voice with Marler Stone and Ethel Taylor Maxwell. She began her professional singing career in New Orleans with John "Papa" Gros. After Hurricane Katrina brought her back to Memphis, she and her husband Robert began performing together as a duo, and in revolving trio configurations with the likes of Lannie McMillian, Jim Spake, Joe Restivo, Davy Ray Bennett, Stephen Newman, and Jim Duckworth. Candace also performs with her band, the Swinging Machetes, and has an original song in an upcoming documentary film.
Robert Mache, long-time guitarist with Dayna Kurtz and Lulu and the Broadsides, will be joining Candace, as will the sublime Jim Spake on clarinet and saxophone.
