Memphis suburbs: Located in the greater Shelby County region, 6 municipalities ring Memphis: Bartlett, Germantown, Arlington, Millington, Collierville, and Lakeland. Access to these cities and towns is easy using the 385-highway system.

Governed by their own elected officials, each community celebrates its own background and flair that makes them unique. City life isn’t far away with each municipality being easily accessible off major highways. Check them out:

Millington, TN

Millington is home to the Navy’s Human Resources Center of Excellence (formerly a training base until 1993), and the base is home to more than 7,500 military, civilian, and contract workers. Surrounding the base, Millington has everything needed for city life, with new store developments being built frequently.

As the home of a military base, Millington’s Annual Flag City Freedom Celebration draws more than 30,000 people to the city for their Independence Day celebrations. Other notable events include their Air Shows and the annual Goat Days Festival during the second week of September that kicks off with the Word’s Greatest Goat Parade (yes, it is exactly what it sounds like!).

Bartlett, TN

Founded in November 1866, Bartlett was originally a farming community. Today it’s the 12th largest city in Tennessee with nearly 60,000 residents, but it hasn’t lost its small-town charm. Bartlett is a place for families with a mission to be a town to live, work, play, raise a family, and retire. Bartlett has several parks popular with families, a performing arts and conference center, and other recreational activities like bowling alleys, movie theatres, festivals, and farmers markets.

Germantown, TN

Named one of the nation’s top ten small cities for working parents by Forbes Magazine, Germantown prides itself as being a close-knit community with strong family ties. Their annual festivals include the Family Fourth Celebration, Germantown Charity Horse Show, the Germantown Festival, and a holiday parade and tree lighting.

The Saddle Creek shopping district is one of the key shopping destinations in the greater Shelby County region and features unique restaurants as well as a host of name brand shops, including the Mid-South’s only Apple Store.

Collierville, TN

Collierville’s historic town square was ranked in 2014 as Parade Magazine’s Best Main Street in America, and the entire area is equally as charming. While much of the city has grown beyond its humble beginnings, new developments in the city still manage to keep the charming feel of the town square, including their outdoor mall, The Avenue at Carriage Crossing. Notable events include a summer concert series, farmers market, a symphony in the Rose Garden, and their new annual Collierville BrewFest.

Arlington, TN

Arlington might be a small town, but it’s growing fast, and new housing developments and amenities are being built to help the small town expand. Arlington is a great place to take a peek into the past with attractions like the Rachel H.K. Burrow Museum that holds a collection of local memorabilia and historical items, a historic post office museum, and one of the few remaining blacksmith shops still operating in the United States.

Lakeland, TN

Lakeland has been designated among the top 10 most affordable places to live in Tennessee. It has small town charm while being only a short drive to the Cordova or Houston Levee areas. Lakeland is developing a new Lake District, a 160-acre mixed use community featuring retail space, hotels, new housing developments, and an assisted living community.
