We know you’re already following the Memphis 2021 playlist on Spotify – and if you’re not, click here now and correct that – but it’s been a minute since we highlighted some of our favorite recent releases. It’s officially windows down, music up weather, so here are a few we’re cranking to max volume.
The PRVLG – “Backwards and Forwards”
If you’re like us, you have been not-so-patiently waiting for new music from brothers Christopher and Christian Underwood, a.k.a. The PRVLG, for what feels like FOREVER. And then, in one magical week, we got TWO new songs! “Backwards and Forwards” has us in our feels because we remember seeing them play it live in the before-times – but don’t sleep on “Coming Back.”
Don Lifted – “Lost in Orion”
Wait, wait – remember what we said about how long we’d been waiting for new music from The PRVLG?? Well, when it rains it pours because we’ve also been writing emo poetry to Don Lifted’s Alero and Contour since 2018. “Lost In Orion” is the alternative rapper’s debut on Oxford/Memphis label Fat Possum, and we can’t wait for more.
Talibah Safiya – “Animal Kingdom”
Y’all already know we had this one on repeat already but then she hit us these visuals and… dang, is it getting warmer in here? We love this combo of the lyric video with a visual narrative because it puts Talibah’s lyrical manifesto front and center. And yes, if you were wondering, this one has us missing live music too – you ain’t seen a show til you’ve seen Ms. Safiya do “Animal Kingdom” live!
Short in the Sleeve – “Indian Summer”
This synth pop playground is the perfect track for summer – and fittingly, it’s called “Indian Summer,” which is also the name of Short in the Sleeve’s forthcoming EP. This track is out on all streaming platforms now, and we hear that the EP will be followed by a full album, too. Is it our birthday??
