Whether you need a Memphis music education, to get connected to what’s new and notable in the scene, or if you’re just in search of some inspiration, our city’s podcasters have you covered. We rounded up a few of our favorites to get you started.
The Shellcast
The Shellcast, a new podcast by the Levitt Shell, is all about music, culture, and Memphis! The Levitt Shell team is interviewing artists, musicians, movers, and shakers and hearing how they’re writing their own stories and building their own communities around the world.
Memphis Musicology
“Memphis Musicology” is a podcast by our own contributor Ezra Wheeler, originally started as part of his work at the Memphis Rock’n’Soul Museum, that explores everything from Hi Records to the Hi Tone. Now you can tune in to WYXR to get schooled by Ezra on Dead Wax every Tuesday morning, but head over to the Memphis Musicology archives via the OAM Network to learn about the past, present, and future of the greatest music city on earth.
Shangri-La Records Podcast
This monthly podcast from Memphis independent record store Shangri-La is hosted by the shop’s co-owner John Miller and Shangri-La alum/host J.D. Reager. They dive into what’s happening at the shop, just-in store arrivals of the new and used variety, and they always feature a unique, one-off recorded performance from some of their favorite Memphis musicians/groups. Be sure to listen for info on specials/discounts in the store, too! You can find the podcast via Spotify, Amazon, Stitcher, TuneIn, Google Play or Apple Music.
Memphis Music Innerview
Mitch McCracken has a long history in Memphis radio, and his Memphis Music Innerview podcast was born from a series of articles he wrote for the Examiner and a desire to document the stories of our city’s musicians. “These are not question and answer interviews, they are conversations,” McCracken says. “Many of the people I interviewed have shared stories that they have never told anyone else in an interview. That was what I was looking for, not just stories but unique stories.” Memphis Music InnerView is a production of Planet Earth Complex in partnership with Get Cracken Productions. Start anywhere, but we particularly enjoyed the conversation recorded in 2013 with the late Ardent Studios founder John Fry!
