Organizations commemorate King’s legacy with socially distant service

Organizations around Memphis are reimagining their commemoration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday around the coronavirus pandemic.

The holiday, celebrated on the third Monday of January, is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service. But during a pandemic that has pushed many Americans to be in need of that service, community service organizations have been tasked with figuring out how to deliver.

Over a five-day period of Jan. 14-18, Volunteer Memphis is hosting its fifth annual MLK Days of Service. It will feature about 40 events, mostly virtual, for volunteers who want to help out. They are events such as diversity and inclusion panels, and webinars on establishing and improving credit.
