‘Black Ice’ Climbers Are Breaking Down Barriers Into The Outdoors

There are no mountains in Memphis. The only rocks rest on jetties in the Mississippi River, lonesome current breaks where few people dare to venture as the river’s muddy waters ripple past endless rows of cotton, rice and soy. The city itself sits on a bluff, overlooking passing barges headed south to New Orleans, or north to St. Louis.

For some Memphis residents, the scene is as close to nature as they ever get.
