Since 1963, ARTSmemphis has stood as a pillar of Memphis’ vibrant creative ecosystem—supporting artists, nonprofits, and cultural organizations that shape the soul of our city. Now, the organization is on the verge of making history: ARTSmemphis is set to surpass $100 million in grant funding distributed to the Memphis arts community.
“For ARTSmemphis, it is a really transformative moment,” said Elizabeth Rouse, President and CEO of ARTSmemphis. “This milestone represents decades of generosity, vision, and belief in the power of the arts to transform lives and strengthen communities.”
A City That Believes in Its Creators
What makes this achievement especially powerful is where the funding comes from. According to Rouse, nearly 93% of this year’s revenue came from private philanthropy—with individual donors and Memphis-based corporations and foundations leading the way.
In the past year alone, around 50% of ARTSmemphis’ support came from individual gifts, and nearly 40% from corporate contributions. It’s a testament to the spirit of civic pride and community investment that defines Memphis.
“We have folks who give $5 a month, $10 a month, and then we have major supporters at higher levels,” Rouse said. “Every dollar counts, and it takes a village to make a milestone like this happen.”
Sustaining the Arts Through Community Support
While ARTSmemphis receives some support through the Tennessee Arts Commission (TAC)—which is primarily funded by the sale of specialty license plates—there’s no consistent government funding outside of that channel. With potential federal funding cuts looming, ARTSmemphis is doubling down on its call for local support.
“The artists and organizations we fund face real risks,” said Rouse. “It’s more important than ever that we continue growing private support to ensure the arts in Memphis not only survive, but thrive.”
The organization’s endowment also plays a key role, helping fund an annual grant program that reaches 85 local organizations, from grassroots arts groups to major cultural institutions.
Looking Ahead: The Next $100 Million
As ARTSmemphis closes in on this historic benchmark by the end of its fundraising year on June 30, the moment is more than a milestone—it’s a launchpad.
“This is the beginning of the next chapter,” said Rouse. “We’re not stopping here. We’re looking ahead to the next $100 million and the next generation of Memphis artists who deserve our support.”
From murals and music to dance, theater, and spoken word—ARTSmemphis is proof that when a city invests in its creatives, it invests in its future.
