What do New York Fashion Week, Broadway, the Clintons, and Memphis have in common? The answer: Babbie Lovett. A 92-year-old fashion icon and cultural trailblazer, Babbie’s influence stretches from the runways of New York to the grand stages of Tony Award-winning productions, leaving an indelible mark on the world of fashion, arts, and philanthropy.

Now, Tennessee Ballet Theater (TBT) is bringing her extraordinary journey to life in their 2025 spring production, The ICON, Babbie Lovett, Fashion Legend. This one-of-a-kind performance pays homage to one of Memphis’ most visionary figures—past, present, and forever.

A Life Woven with Art, Fashion, and Philanthropy

Babbie’s story is nothing short of legendary. From entertaining U.S. troops through the USO to redefining ‘Trashion’ as high fashion, her creative footprint has touched every corner of the arts. She has spearheaded major fundraisers alongside the Rockefellers, shaped the fashion industry, and mentored rising talent along the way. The ICON brings her world to the stage, weaving together dance, theater, and storytelling in a way that immerses audiences in her remarkable life.

Through a series of dynamic dance pieces, introduced by monologues that set the scene, viewers will experience the highs and lows of Babbie’s journey. This production is more than a performance—it’s a celebration of the way art connects people and keeps history alive.

Experience The ICON at McCoy Theatre

Directed by Erin Walter and featuring choreography by Max Robinson and Steven Prince Tate, The ICON will be performed at McCoy Theatre at Rhodes College, Babbie’s alma mater. The show runs for two weekends:

📅 April 4 & 5 – 7:30 PM
📅 April 6 – 2:30 PM
📅 April 11 & 12 – 7:30 PM

🎟️ Tickets are $45, with a group discount ($40 per ticket) for parties of six or more.

Following each performance, guests are invited to a special wine reception, where they’ll have the chance to meet Babbie Lovett herself. The reception will also showcase models and dancers in Babbie’s designs, alongside Sue Ambrose’s couture pieces constructed from bicycle tires. Additionally, Memphis’ own “Recycle King,” Paul Thomas—one of Babbie’s protégés—will present stunning set pieces, and an interactive, multi-sensory exhibit in the lobby will offer a deeper dive into Babbie’s world.

This is more than just a show—it’s a tribute to a Memphis legend whose influence spans generations. Don’t miss this unforgettable celebration of art, fashion, and history!
