Tennessee among fastest-growing states in U.S., Census Bureau data shows

Tennessee has been named one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S., according to data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to the report, Tennessee increased by 82,988 people from July 2021 to July 2022. The total state population is now 7,051,339.

Texas, which ranked No. 1, joins California as the only states with a resident population above 30 million.

The South was the fastest-growing region, growing by more than 1.3 million residents.

Here are the top 10 states that saw the most numeric growth as of July 2022:

  1. Texas – 470,708
  2. Florida – 416,754
  3. North Carolina – 133,088
  4. Georgia – 124,847
  5. Arizona – 94,320
  6. South Carolina – 89,368
  7. Tennessee – 82,988
  8. Washington – 45,041
  9. Utah – 41,687
  10. Idaho – 34,719

After a historically low rate of change in 2020 and 2021, the U.S. population increased by 1,256,003 to 333,287,557 in 2022.

“There was a sizable uptick in population growth last year compared to the prior year’s historically low increase,” Kristie Wilder, a demographer in the Population Division at the Census Bureau, said in the report. “A rebound in net international migration, coupled with the largest year-over-year increase in total births since 2007, is behind this increase.”

Here are the top 10 most populous states as of July 2022:

  1. California – 39,029,342
  2. Texas – 30,029,572
  3. Florida – 22,244,823
  4. New York – 19,677,151
  5. Pennsylvania – 12,972,008
  6. Illinois – 12,582,032
  7. Ohio – 11,756,058
  8. Georgia – 10,912,876
  9. North Carolina – 10,698,973
  10. Michigan – 10,034,113

The study is from the Bureau’s Population Estimates Program. The analysis looked at current data on births, deaths, and migrations to calculate population change.
