Royal Studios is the 3rd oldest continually operated studio in the world. It was the home of Hi Records and the place where all of Al Green’s hits were recorded. Today, Royal continues to make records by artist such as Robert Cray, Wu-Tang Clan, John Mayer, Boz Scaggs, the Mark Ronson-Bruno Mars song of the decade “Uptown Funk,” and more.

Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios Specifications

Studio A

Our Studio A is the historical room and the main room (60’x30’). It’s been in use since 1956 and remains unchanged since WIllie Mitchell perfected its designed it in 1969. It’s where all the famous Hi Records where recorded (Al Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay OV Wright etc) as well as current modern day hits by John Mayer, The room is large enough for full band recording or 20 piece orchestra. It’s has a grand piano, Hammond B3, Drum Kit, Bass Amp, Guitar Amps and more. Control room A has the MCI 536 console that was originally used at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. We have the MCI JH 24 2” tape machine and Pro Tools Ultimate with Avid HD interfaces.

Studio B

Studio B is the Control room that was built in 1974 as a “Quadraphonic” Room. Records where made in this control room from 1974-1988 by artist such as Al Green, Ann Peebles, Rod Stewart and Keith Richards. Today it functions as a production Studio and is a favorite place for writers and producers to create music.

Studio C

Studio C is one of the oldest hip hop rooms in Memphis. It’s been a production studio for Memphis Rap since 1986. In the early days the room utilized a Fostex 8trk cassette recorder with two massive Altec Voice of the Theater speakers used in Studio A in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. There have been a lot of well known underground Memphis rap artist recorded hits here such as Playa Fly and Gangsta Blac. Today the room still has the massive Altec VOT speakers but also Adam Audio monitors. Studio C also has latest addition of Pro Tools with a UAD Apollo 16 Mk2, BAE Neve 1073 mic pre and Retro Double Wide Compressor and free reign to Royal’s Classic Mic Collection.
