WAMM Recommends: Week of September 20

From the We Are Memphis Music team, here’s a mix of live music picks we think you can’t afford to miss out on this week.

Terror
6:30 p.m., Wednesday September 22, Growler’s
$18

Over the past twenty years, few bands have embodied the spirit of hardcore quite like Terror, the Los Angeles band who has won over legions of fans nationwide with their breakneck touring schedule and unrelentlessly heavy sound. While I’m far from a connoisseur of hardcore music, I’ve had several friends who are big in the scene tell me that this is a show not to be missed, and who am I to disagree? So lace up your boots, crack open a PBR, and hit the pit!

Blato Zlato
7:30-9 p.m., Wednesday September 22, The Green Room At Crosstown Arts
$15

The acclaimed Balkan fusion sorcerers behind Blato Zlato are bringing their roadshow to the Bluff City for the first time Wednesday, where the adventurous listener can expect to find the New Orleans ensemble lean charmingly on the improvisational muse in service to their uniquely Louisianan take on Eastern European folk traditions. Packed to the brim with soaring harmonies and off-kilter rhythmic plunges towards unexpected finish lines, these cross-cultural wonders should find ample shock and awe in a city that thrives on compelling and free-spirited sonic concoctions.

Marcella Simien
5:30-8 p.m., Thursday September 23, The Grove at Germantown Performing Arts Center
$5

Ordinarily we wouldn’t recommend the same artist in back-to-back weeks – if you’re paying close attention, you know we included Marcella in last week’s recs – but her show at the Levitt Shell was canceled due to inclement weather. Luckily, we’ve got another chance to catch her – at an outdoor, distanced venue, too! – this week, at Germantown Performing Arts Center’s gorgeous new(ish) The Grove. It’s not free but it’s the next best thing: a $5 bill will get you in the door, and you can grab your ticket in advance!

Mortalus/ReFrame/Slamhound
9 p.m., Friday September 24, Hi-Tone (Small Room)
$10

When we last checked in with our friends at The Hi-Tone, they’d moved shop a little further down Cleveland Street, and those looking for a chance to scope out their new digs could do far worse than the triple header hitting the new ‘small room’ this Friday, where $10 wins you the delicious thrash spectacle of Mortalus, the latest in Little Rock’s lineage of proud metal torchbearers. Local prog-metal throwbacks Reframe, who’ve recently collaborated with no less a luminary than Living Colour’s Corey Glover, open, alongside Slamhound, who’ve been pulverizing Memphian skulls with a thick sludge of stoner-rock for a stunning twenty years now. Like things heavy? The Hi-Tone’s your spot on Friday.

Son Volt
8 p.m., Sunday September 26, Lafayette’s Music Room
$25

Since the mid-90’s, Son Volt has been one of the most prolific and influential alt-country bands on earth, equally capable of producing introspective folk ballads as they are heavy alternative rock. Fronted by former Uncle Tupelo member Jay Farrar, the band has undergone several changes over the past few decades, but they remain a captivating live show, especially for fans of bands such as Wilco, Lucero, and Old 97’s.
