Have you recovered from your turkey-and-sides induced food coma? (We’re still coming out of ours, tbh.) As we plugged back in and reconnected with the outside world this morning, a few things popped up that we wanted to share. Keep scrolling for stuff we think you should know about, and as always, reach out if you’ve got ideas, suggestions or feedback on what you’d like to see in this space: music@wearememphis.com.

Talkin’ errthang with the king of all grills

A few weeks back during Red Bull’s Dance Your Style competition, Demicia Inman from VIBE found time to catch up with our own DJ Paul, who was fixing up what sounds like a feast to rival the one we all just had (including, ahem, corn on the cob and his branded ‘On Errthang’ seasoning). We learned that Paul has new music coming, that he always knew Memphis hip hop and jookin’ would go global (“it’s too dope”) and that he’s still an all-time ambassador for our city:

“Memphis has been doing its thing for a long time. Just like how Three 6 won an Oscar, Issac Hayes won an Oscar. He’s from Memphis, Tennessee. He won an Oscar in 1973. Memphis has been killing it for a long time. Stax Records Shoutout to all those guys. Everybody has been doing so, it was gonna happen regardless. Memphis might be at this point one day, it might be at this point another day, but it’s gonna always have fire music. That’s what our city is about. You can go pick a random dude down the street, and that motherfu**er might know how to play the sh*t out of a piano or guitar. It’s in our blood.”

Fix you a plate

Even if you’re pretty sure you could never eat another bite after last week, Memphis Slim House has a pretty cool take on the potluck scene that you might still be into. With different hosts each time, Slim House’s Potluck events are an opportunity to gather with other songwriters, share what you’re working on – and where you’re stuck – and share a bite to eat. The next one is coming up on December 12 (4-7 p.m. at Slim House) and is hosted by Tres Hinds.

Got a song that needs a second verse or a hook? Got a favorite dish that you love to share with friends? Bring them both to ‘The Potluck’ every second Sunday!

Here’s how it works…

  • Bring your unfinished song to get input from other songwriters.
  • The original songwriter gives the new lyrics a ‘yay’ or ‘nay’.
  • Song split sheets are completed on the spot with copies given to each writer for submission to their respective PROs.
  • Everyone leaves with a completed (or as close as possible) song collectively written by the group.

RSVP to attend here.

Call me a GRAMMY nominee

Lots of love to all the Memphis and Memphis-connected artists who received GRAMMY nominations last week, including a first nod for one of our faves, Valerie June, for “Call Me a Fool,” her collab with the Queen of Memphis Soul Carla Thomas!

Bob Mehr’s got the scoop on all the artists in the mix over at The Commercial Appeal.

It was a snowy weekend in Memphis – we hope you had a good album to snuggle up with. Or maybe you just let the heat radiating off of Ja Morant keep you warm? There’s enough of that to go around, and the Grizz even get a mention in this week’s round-up of stuff we […]

Times are bleak, fam. Concerts big and small are being canceled or postponed again, and most of the ways you’ll find Memphis music in the news this week are, to use a technical term, a total bummer. We managed to rustle up a few things that brought us some light, and we think they might […]

Happy new year, Memphis music lovers! Things we did on our holiday vacation: ate too much, unplugged, fell into a pit of despair watching all of the NYE shows get canceled as Omicron cases exploded, the usual. HBU? Anyway, we’re back and that means The Latest is back, too – here’s a look at […]
