It was a long holiday weekend for most of us and it’s officially hotter than the surface of the sun in Memphis – that means it’s time to crank the A/C, stay inside and catch up on what the internet is saying about Memphis music this week. Lucky for you: they always talkin’ bout us.
The Gospel According to Mavis Staples
“Staples is a canny retailer of her own story. She’s not going to get into a funk over lost loves and ancient disappointments—not now, not in front of you or me. … That ability to deflect, to find humor in complicated experience, indicates not a lack of depth but a self-knowing soul.” – The New Yorker Magazine
Come for The King, stay for the soul
With the release of the new Baz Luhrman Elvis film, there’s been lots of new conversation around The King and as such, plenty of love for Memphis. There’s NME’s ‘Local’s Guide’ to music in Memphis and USA Today’s essential Elvis (20 songs you need to know) – but our favorite is this one from GQ: Elvis might get you there, but the soul of Memphis will make you stay.
“It’s still a music town though—whether it’s the hip-hop of Yo Gotti or Pooh Shiesty or the soul of Seventh Avenue, music runs through the veins of the city. And for music lovers, there’s as much reason to visit Memphis as there is New Orleans, Nashville or New York City.”
