During these past five months of quarantine, we’ve gradually settled into our new norm of doing everything from home. It has pushed a lot of us to become somewhat self sufficient. For some of us, the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ (DIY) agenda has taken a toll on several things from our self esteem to our time. But stress no more, as there are several easy ways to not only pamper yourself, but to keep up with your normal beauty standards while staying at home.
While in phase one of the stay at home order, some of us practically panicked when it came down to our wax appointments being canceled. Thankfully, one of Memphis’ own wax guru, Kei Curry, owner of the world-renowned Pretty Girls Get Waxed salon came to our rescue with the #PrettyGirlsGetWaxedChallenge! With her simple waxing tutorials and signature hard wax, this DIY challenge had us all snatching ourselves out of reality and putting us back into the game. With a good exfoliating scrub, an ingrown hair serum, a wax warmer, applicator sticks, and of course great hard wax, are all the top keys to performing a successful and most pain-less wax session at home.
Still uncomfortable to visit your local nail salon or don’t have the time for your usual mani pedi? Well you can set up your own nail shop at home, with the use of a foot bath, nail kit, and quality press ons. Speaking of press ons, there are so many nail guru’s in the city going crazy with the designs. One of the best in the game is Stacie of Glow Getter Nail Co, who provides luxury, gel, nail sets that’ll have you looking and feeling like the QOM, Queen of Memphis.
DIY Mani Pedi
Step 1: Prep your nails
Do a few rubs of acetone-free nail polish remover on a cotton pad over your finger & toe nails to make sure they’re squeaky clean.
Step 2: Soak your feet
But first, make sure you have your favorite playlist on, a comfy place to sit, your favorite libations in rotation, and if you’re truly trying to relax, then throw in any other favorites that’ll set your mood.
Pull out your electric foot bath, or take a bin/bucket, and add warm water. Now I know as a hardworking Memphian, always on the grind that you already have plenty of oils, bath salts, and more. Gone pull that out too, and get to soaking away. If you want to try something new and affordable, you can add in a half cup of epsom salts or kosher salt, a few drops of essential oils of your choice, and three tablespoons of baking soda. This will give you super soft feet and also relieve any tension you might have built up.
Step 3: Exfoliate
Don’t nobody want to feel hard hands and feet, so let’s apply a sugar scrub like asap! You can purchase one, or make your own. By using sugar, honey, essential oils, and coffee grounds just to name a few. Don’t forget to pop out your pumice stone/block and a pedicure file.
Step 4: Trim & shape
The nail kit essentials: toenail clippers, nail file, buffer, and cuticle tools. Once you’ve clipped, shaped, and tidied up your nails, don’t forget to add some cuticle oil. If you don’t have any on hand, essential oils such as tea tree, almond, or vitamin e oil are all great substitutes.
Step 5: Massage and moisturize
Skipping this next step is setting yourself up to be checked like never before. It ain’t never a right time to be ashy or tore up in these streets nor at home. With either foot/hand cream, whipped body butter, or a rich lotion, massage with the moisturizer of your choice, and take your time with it. Once you’re done, take an alcohol pad and go over your nails with it to pick up any moisture on it. Doing so will allow the press ons to apply better.
Step 6: Apply press on nails
Lay out all the nails and try them on to see which size fits best. Then pick your adhesive, whether its nail glue or adhesive strips. And voilà, magic!
Natural soap bars, facial masks, and moisturizers are always great go-tos if you want radiant skin.
